Michael Makropoulos, born in Thessaloniki, attended school in the Lake Constance region before studying German Studies, Sociology, Philosophy, and Communication Studies at the University of Göttingen. He taught sociological theory, the history of social theory, and cultural sociology at several universities. Since leaving academia, he has continued his work on the theory of modernity while painting abstract works and creating concrete objects.
